Vera Kersting (1997) is a Rotterdam-based artist who paints images that explore relational dynamics between media images, digital & physical landscapes and the absurdity of contemporary reality. The paintings are charged with unsettling emotions of conflict, pervasive in society - yet often unsurfaced. Boundaries play a significant role: some boundaries fade, others are addressed, and several appear abruptly — such as the boundary between past - present, subject - object, fiction - reality.
On a plastic level, Vera’s work translates to utilising different techniques, materials, and layers. She paints, wipes away parts, and paints over them again — as a viewer, this makes it possible to discover "entrances" to new spaces each time. The subject matter, often derived from media, historical narratives or personal perceptions, declines straightforward interpretation and is filled with innuendos and double entendres. These dissonances created within the work can universally be understood but are strangely connected to the artist’s own identity.
